Premier Wavesailing Spots on the South African West Coast

Cape Point - Platboom

General

Situated in the Cape Point Nature Reserve, this is the most scenic of all wavesailing spots in the world. The bay faces southwest, directly towards the oncoming swell. The sun is from behind for most of the day, and the water is generally crystal clear making this spot very photogenic.

Conditions

On hot summer days at the end of the southeast cycle, the wind is probably still blowing at Platboom. Sometimes it blows all day, moderating slightly between 11h00 and 15h00.

Cross-offshore winds, hollow peaking beach-break conditions but rocky on the inside (for experts only). Excellent for wave riding, and good for wave jumping. This spot picks up a lot of swell. It could be 1 ft at Sunset beach, but mast high at Cape Point. On a medium swell this spot needs a low tide.

Disadvantages

The wind is often too strong (afternoon) or alternatively dies at a rapid rate (especially in the mornings)! The peaking waves break in front of the rocky shoreline section. Do not let go of your gear in this region!
